75km Deer and Daffs

Welcome the return of Spring with a led ride around the Royal Parks:

  • This is a ride for a spring day. You know it’s time to ride again when the buds are bursting and over a million bulbs are detonating across the royal parks and the deer are busy grazing the ultra-rare acid grasslands against a back-drop of ancient oaks. It’s easy as a life-long Londoner to dismiss the Royal Parks as ‘places for the tourists’, but this ride will show that they soothe even the most jaded of city spirits. The route joins the central parks with the south-western deer parks using quiet tree-lined streets amd segregated cycle paths. We use hard-packed gravel tracks around the parks.

  • Starting and finishing: The London Cycle Workshop, 42 Sheen Lane, London SW14 8LP

    Meet: 08.45 for a 9:00 rollout

    Return: around 14.00

    Surfaces: mixed surfaces

    Distance: c. 46 miles (75 km)

    Difficulty: Intermediate/social

    Group size: 10

  • The pace will be easy, (approx 12-15 mph) meaning that the ride is suitable for anyone with some confidence and experience in riding on low traffic streets and is able to ride 40 miles. There’ll be a cafe stop half-way round. Any roadworthy bike is suitable for this ride.

  • Leaving Sheen, we use the Thames Path to take us into the heart of Royal London, via the wilderness of Brompton Cemetery and the grandeur of Kensington Gardens until we arrive at Hyde Park. Thereafter, it’s the daffodil heaven of Green Park and St. James’s. On a Sunday, the roads around the central parks are closed to traffic and we have time to cruise and enjoy over a million spring bulbs. Then, it’s along the Thames to the deer parks of Richmond, Bushy and Hampton, where we ride on gravel tracks, watch the deer and enjoy the bright skies after a long, dark winter. From Hampton, it’s back along the river to Sheen, where the ride ends.
